Cambridge mark schemes for 0500 reward specific, demonstrated technique — not just fluent prose. Students who write well but have not been taught how Cambridge marks writing consistently lose marks on:
Cambridge rewards narrow features: range of sentence types, lexical precision, structural cohesion, paragraphing logic. A student who writes engaging prose but doesn't deliberately demonstrate these features loses marks the examiner explicitly looks for.
Directed writing on Paper 2 requires you to write *to* someone, *for* a reason, *in* a specific form. Many students ignore these constraints and write in their natural voice — exactly the opposite of what the mark scheme rewards.
"Explain," "Identify," "Find," and "Comment" each carry specific demands in Cambridge mark schemes. Confusing one for another can cost 2–3 marks per question, across many questions.
Paper 1 (Writing) gives you 80 minutes for two substantial tasks — that's 40 minutes per piece. Students who spend 50 minutes on the first task run out of time for the second, forfeiting 25% of available marks.

Grade thresholds vary by session based on cohort performance and paper difficulty — this is Cambridge's "grade protection" system, not an indication that standards are shifting. The table below shows official thresholds for recent sessions (out of 120 marks total).

A Grade 9 in Oct/Nov 2024 required 108/120 — 90% of available marks. Grade 8 and 9 boundaries are won and lost in single-digit marks. Exam technique is not a marginal factor; it is the difference between Grade 7 and Grade 9.
Cambridge mark schemes attach specific meaning to command words, especially on Paper 2 comprehension questions. Misreading one costs marks that your understanding had already earned.
